Description of the thesis topic
The thesis project aims to better understand at the cellular and molecular level the mechanisms responsible for copper toxicity and the strategies put in place by bacteria to resist.
Copper has been used as an antibacterial agent for thousands of years. The immune system also exploits this powerful bactericidal power to eliminate pathogenic organisms. Although its effectiveness is indisputable, the processes causing its toxicity and the differences observed between several copper-complex are still largely misunderstood.
The PhD student will be part of a consortium of 5 teams, he will mainly focus on the microbiology and biochemistry part, and more specifically on the role played by the molecular chaperones. These key proteins could play a major role in preventing protein aggregation induced by copper.
The candidate is hired as part of an ANR project. He will work in a consortium of 5 research teams with expertise ranging from bioinorganic chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry and structural biology.
The student will have to carry out experiments in the laboratories of certain partners. Mobility is required.
The candidate need to have a first experience of the basic techniques of molecular biology and biochemistry.
