Job Description
Thesis Subject
This thesis aims to investigate how to design argument mining systems (detection, classification, and extraction of argumentative relationships in texts) that minimize biases introduced by training data, annotators, and underlying neural architectures. The ultimate goal is to produce argument mining tools that are more robust, generalizable, and fair, applicable to sensitive domains such as the analysis of public debates, content moderation, or decision support, while questioning the very notion of “neutrality” in a context where argumentation inherently reflects situated positions.
The PhD is funded by the ERC CoG PANDORA (Deep Multimodal Learning
for Mining and Generation of Arguments).
Your Work Environment
This research is conducted as part of the MARIANNE team at the I3S Laboratory (Laboratory of Computer Science, Signals, and Systems in Sophia Antipolis) of the CNRS and Université Côte d'Azur. The team is based at the Inria Center at Université Côte d'Azur. The team is composed of computer scientists but has a strong interdisciplinary focus, particularly in linguistics, philosophy, sociology, and law. MARIANNE proposes innovative methods for natural language processing that address concrete problems and are both theoretically rigorous and interpretable.
The PhD is funded by the ERC CoG PANDORA (Deep Multimodal Learning
for Mining and Generation of Arguments).
