Abstract. In all living organisms, there is a trade-off in the allocation of metabolic reserves between growth and reproduction. The black soldier fly (BSF) is a farmed insect produced on a large scale, constituting a high-quality feedstuff for fish, poultry, and pet food. Currently, the link between larval growth and future reproduction has not yet been established. This thesis, primarily experimental, will be based on a BSF mass rearing at the IRBI (Institute of Research in Insect Biology). The physiological mechanisms of growth will be measured by microscopy and physiological approaches, with a focus on the muscles, adipose tissue, glycogen and future gonads of males and females. The results will allow for a better understanding of the reproductive processes in this insect within the fundamental context of sexual selection. It will also contribute to the development of an experimental model addressing the questions of stakeholders producing this insect.
Objectives. The aim of this thesis is to understand the biological determinants involved in reproduction. The objectives are to define an experimental model to identify the constraints of sexual selection and to control the parameters for optimizing insect rearing. The thesis's purpose is therefore both fundamental, in the context of studying the trade-off between growth and future reproduction in females and males, and applied, as it also addresses questions raised by insect farming companies.
