Job Description

Thesis Subject

Scientific Context and Challenges:
Optical resonators based on metasurfaces could offer innovative perspectives for photoacoustic imaging, particularly due to their ability to combine guided-mode resonance and very high quality factors. These properties make it possible to envision all-optical, high-resolution, and non-invasive photoacoustic imaging systems with potential biomedical applications.
The development of such sensors requires a detailed understanding of the coupling between acoustic and optical behaviors, as well as the influence of the localization of optical modes on the acoustic bandwidth of the device.
This thesis aims to model, optimize, and experimentally validate such an optical ultrasound sensor based on resonant metasurfaces. The work will focus on three main areas:
1. Multi-physics Modeling:
Development of numerical models to study acoustic and optical interactions in metasurfaces, using in-house codes and COMSOL Multiphysics software.
2. Geometry and Material Optimization:
Systematic exploration of structural parameters (periodicity, thickness, refractive indices) and material properties to maximize the ultrasonic sensitivity of the sensor.
3. Experimental Validation:
Comparison of the predicted simulation performance with experimental characterizations conducted in the laboratory on fabricated prototypes.

Your Work Environment

Work Context:
The thesis will take place within the Mosaic team at the Fresnel Institute (Marseille, France), a leading laboratory in optics and nanophotonics. The PhD student will benefit from:
- The expertise of the team's PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, who are already involved in the development of these sensors.
- Access to the laboratory's experimental characterization facilities.
- A collaborative and multidisciplinary environment at the interface of theory, modeling, and experimentation.
