Job Description

Thesis Subject

Our project aims to open up new avenues in the quantitative detection of nanoplastics by utilizing time-resolved ultraviolet (UV) autofluorescence. Plastics emit intrinsic autofluorescence when illuminated with UV light, offering greater sensitivity than current Raman and infrared spectroscopy methods.

The main goal is to improve detection sensitivity using this autofluorescence, by targeting particles as small as 30 nm in diameter. Another unique feature is the ability to distinguish between different types of plastic by analyzing their autofluorescence lifetimes.

The selected candidate will be responsible for contributing to instrument development and sample characterization. Our approach requires the development of advanced characterization techniques, as well as a deeper understanding of the UV photophysics of nanoplastics. Our innovative UV-based detection method promises increased sensitivity, the ability to detect particles at the nanoscale, and a direct, label-free detection method that is particularly well-suited for environmental applications.

Your Work Environment

The widespread use of plastics has led to a growing environmental crisis, with microplastics and nanoplastics posing major challenges. Nanoplastics, defined as plastic particles smaller than 1 µm, pose the greatest threat due to their ability to penetrate deeper into biological systems and their long-term persistence. Although current analytical methods are effective at detecting particles larger than 3 µm, the identification and quantification of nanoplastics remain a significant technological challenge.

This recruitment is part of the ANR NanoPlasticDetect project.

The position falls under the Scientific and Technical Potential Protection (PPST) sector and therefore, in accordance with regulations, requires that your arrival be authorized by the competent authority at the Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR).
