Description of the thesis topic
This thesis subject is part of an emerging project carried out at the Fresnel Institute under the supervision of Jérome Wenger with European funding ERC. Our group has recently acquired recognized expertise in the control of light in nanophotonic structures and in its application to improve fluorescence spectroscopy.
The objective of this thesis is to extend the possibilities of application of conventional optical microscopes in the ultraviolet. For this, elements of nanophotonic optical antennas will be used to manipulate ultraviolet energy at the nanometric scale and to go far beyond the limits imposed by diffraction.
Our project aims to efficiently detect individual proteins using their autofluorescence in the ultraviolet enhanced by optical nanoantennas. The optical nanoantennas will be used to improve the detection of the fluorescence of a single molecule in the field of ultraviolet, a new area of research. This advance will improve detection sensitivity and achieve single molecule resolution for the first time without the need for an external fluorescent marker.
This project will explore the interfaces between nanophotonics, biophysics and fluorescence spectroscopy. This synergy will allow revolutionary applications in the detection and analysis of unique proteins, by observing the functioning of a single molecule. The results of the project will benefit many applications in structural biology, drug discovery and energy conversion at the nanometric scale.
L'Institut Fresnel est une unité mixte (UMR 7249) du CNRS affilié à Aix Marseille Université et l'Ecole Centrale Marseille. L'Institut Fresnel accueille environ 200 personnes dont environ 40 doctorants qui se spécialisent en optique, photonique, électromagnétiques et traitement du signal. Le doctorant s'incrira dans l'école doctorale ED 352 physique et sciences de la matière d'Aix Marseille université. Les travaux seront effectués au sein de l'équipe MOSAIC de l'Institut Fresnel.

The candidate must have a master's degree.
He / She must have good knowledge in optics and photonics as well as in nanophotonics. Experience in molecular biology or biochemistry or fluorescence spectroscopy would be a plus, but is not essential.
The candidate must demonstrate a good spirit of synthesis and good communication skills. Knowledge of the English language (read / written / spoken) is highly desirable.
