Description of the thesis topic

Within the framework of the ANR Co-Polis project - "Social co-production of the city and citizen research. Regards croisés sur les quartiers populaires et préccaires en France et au Brésil", UMR LAVUE 7218 is recruiting a doctoral student in urban sociology.

The Co-Polis project locates at the junction between social sciences and urban studies, focusing on the study of the modalities of urban co-production between local associations, universities/researchers and facilitators. The proposed thesis aims to contribute to the ANR's scientific programme from a triple perspective: (a) to analyse the conditions of emergence and development of co-produced spaces or co-developed programmes; (b) to report on the diversity of co-production practices; (c) to understand the epistemological issues related to the sharing of knowledge.
The candidate will develop a personal research project within the conceptual and methodological framework of the ANR project and will have to consider the collaborative dimension as the object of his or her investigation as well as the modus operandi of his or her research. He/she will work on several empirical case studies in Ile de France region and will be invited to develop a comparative field in the region of São Paulo. This fieldwork will be carried out using an ethnographic approach including the contribution to participatory action research. The fields of investigation will be chosen in collaboration with the researchers and associative actors involved in the Co-Polis project.
The PhD student will have a good knowledge of sociology and/or urban anthropology and will have a background in the social sciences. He/she will have the general objective of developing a field survey in Ile de France on one of the neighbourhoods identified by the project as an emblematic place of collaboration and will have to have a comparative ground in Brazil.

Work Context

The doctoral student will be supervised by Agnès Deboulet, sociologist, UMR LAVUE and CEDEJ USR 3123 and will be registered at the Doctoral School of Social Sciences of the University of Paris 8 in the framework of a joint direction with the University of São Pãulo under the responsibility of João Sette Whitaker Ferreira. She will be hosted by the LAVUE laboratory (Alter team) at the University of Paris 8 in connection with the Condorcet site and the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme-Paris Nord. He/she will work in close collaboration with ANR participants located on the other LAVUE sites (University of Nanterre, ENSA-PVS) as well as with researchers from other laboratories (CERAPS, University of Lille), UMR LATTS. Within the framework of LAVUE, its contribution will be within the framework of axis 2 Justice and Inequalities and axis 4 Urban emancipation practices. The research aims to become part of the eco-system of this citizen research by working together with partner associations and professionals. In addition to the French team, the doctoral student will develop sustained working links with the Lab'hab team at the University of São Paulo.

Several missions will be entrusted to it
1) He/she will contribute to the documentary research including part of the grey literature and its exploitation for the research collective.
2) He/she will participate in the elaboration and the realization of the multi-site survey among the different protagonists of the co-production (committed inhabitants and members of associations, professionals and intermediaries, researchers but also representatives of local authorities).
3) He/she will co-animate part of the research in coordination with the researchers: organization of inter-terrain seminars in France in particular and will contribute with the research team to synthesize the data produced in the different fields and in the spaces of inter-actor exchanges.
4) It.will participate internally with other members in the organization of collective work and exchange times and reports.

Constraints and risks

This thesis requires quite a lot of flexibility as most of the workshops and action-research time take place in the evenings and sometimes even on weekends. The survey and consortium meetings will require short trips to France and a few months in Brazil, where it will be hosted by Lab'hab under the responsibility of João Sette Whitakher and Karina Leitão.

The candidate should hold a Master's degree in human and social sciences and have experience in associative life, ethnographic surveys and a solid knowledge of sociology/anthropology/political science and urban studies. The ability to conduct an empirical investigation is just as necessary as the ability to synthesize and analyze from the fields of expertise (mobilization, cooperative action, participatory studies...). A great rigour will be necessary to situate oneself and help the research collective while progressing in its own work. The future doctoral student will report regularly on the progress of his/her own work, part of which will be part of the collective research and will be involved in publications and the promotion of research.
Fluency in Portuguese is required. Written and spoken English needed.
