Job Description
Thesis Subject
Conduct thorough literature reviews and design experiments on the optical properties of 2D ferroelectric materials. Implement experiments to track and control sliding ferroelectricity using optical techniques and AFM. Participate in the fabrication and optimisation of van der Waals heterostructure devices in a state-of-the-art cryo-optical laboratory. Contribute to the development of applications in 2D quantum photonics and optical neuromorphic computing. Present results at international conferences and contribute to publications in high-impact scientific journals.
Within the EIC Pathfinder project 2DFERROPLEX, the PhD candidate will focus on detecting, tracking, and optically controlling the ferroelectric state of two-dimensional materials (3R TMD heterostructures: WSe₂, WS₂, MoSe₂). He/she will develop optical switching strategies for ferroelectric domains, with the aim of demonstrating an original optoelectronic device suitable as a nonlinear activation function for photonic neuromorphic computing. The work involves close collaboration with consortium partners (Manchester, ICFO Barcelona, TUM Munich, Strasbourg, Prague).
Required skills
Master's degree (or equivalent) in physics, photonics, or condensed matter. Strong interest in experimental physics, nanofabrication, and optical spectroscopy. Proficiency in Python. Familiarity with instrumentation (Arduino, 3D printing) is a plus. Good organisational skills, ability to work independently and within an international team. Proficiency in French and/or English.
Your Work Environment
The PhD candidate will be hosted at CRHEA (Centre de Recherche sur l'Hétéroépitaxie et ses Applications), UMR 7073 CNRS, Sophia Antipolis, within the 2D+ team. He/she will have access to a 100 m² cryo-optical laboratory equipped with a cryostat for micro-photoluminescence, reflection spectroscopy, and optoelectronics, as well as a FabLab dedicated to van der Waals heterostructure fabrication. The project is co-funded by the EIC Pathfinder consortium 2DFERROPLEX and the Doctoral School. Contract duration: 3 years.
