Description du sujet de thèse

Aim of the project:
This three-year PhD project aims to investigate and understand serpentinization sourced hydrogen systems using the Grischun area in south-east Switzerland as an example. The study will require to
1. Compile maps and sections with the main tectonic structures and the position of mantle bodies in SE Grisons based on field work and the use of geophysical methods
2. Recongnize, describe and interpret main fault structures and litho-stratigraphic interfaces that control deep fluid flow linking the surface to potential mantle bodies underlying the Austro-Alpine nappes in SE Grischun
3. Interact with hydrodynamic modellers and geochemists to develop and test first-order models for large-scale fluid flow in the SE Grischun area to test the existence of a serpentinite sourced H2 system
Required profile of the candidate:
The candidate needs to have a good understanding of geological systems, in the best case be familiar with the geology of Grisons, and should also be able to develop a combined geological-hydrological-geochemical approach combining large scale tectonics with a hydromechanical modelling approach.
The PhD candidate will be based at the Institut Terre et Environnement of Strasbourg at the University of Strasbourg/CNRS. Interactions with other universities and industry are envisaged

Contexte de travail

The Strasbourg Institute of Earth and Environment (ITES) (UMR7063) based on the four disciplinary pillars of the study of the Earth and its surface environment: Hydrology, Geochemistry, Geology, and Geophysics. ITES comprises six teams:
Isotopic and Experimental Biogeochemistry
Active Deformation and Dynamics of Landforms
Geological Systems
Geophysics and Process Imaging
Seismology
Transfers in Continental Hydrosystems
involved in five thematic areas:
Deformations and Hazards
Continental Surface Dynamics
Water Resources and Associated Transfers
Earth Structure and Dynamics
Geological Systems and (Geo)Reservoirs
The PhD will be based at ITES in Strasbourg and the main supervisor will be Gianreto Manatschal. Collaborations with international universities (in particular Bern in Switzerland) and with start ups and industry are planned.
