Job Description

Thesis Subject

--This project is part of a research program dedicated to the optimization and investigations of the mechanism of action of prodrugs of the 3-benzylmenadione series, including various members of which possess antiparasitic properties. The objectives of this doctoral work focus primarily on the development of highly fluorescent compounds to enable their coupling, via click chemistry, with antiparasitic prodrugs, and thus to track, using confocal fluorescence microscopy, the localization and bioactivation of the pharmacophore within an infected cell. These fluorescent systems will be sensitive not only to the bioactivation process but also to the redox state of the activated drug candidate. The candidate will be responsible for experimental work in organic chemistry, characterization and analysis (NMR, HPLC, etc.), photophysical and electrochemical studies, and the writing of scientific reports, and will benefit from an international research environment (both industrial and academic) as part of the European EIC PathFinder Open project funded by the European Commission.

The candidate's activities will focus primarily on:
- Development of new, functionalized, high-brightness fluorophores for click chemistry approaches with various prodrug partners.
- Experimental work in organic and/or analytical chemistry.
- Analyses (NMR, HPLC…)
- Electrochemical and photophysical studies of fluorophore-Prodrug adducts in Different Oxidation States
- Scientific reports and publications in English.
- A B2 level in English is required for this position.

The candidate must have:
- a solid knowledge of organic synthesis and synthetic methodology, and
- knowledge of fluorophore chemistry and photophysics.
In addition, the candidate must have strong communication skills (collaborative work and regular exchanges with the consortium's five teams) and be a good team player capable of working effectively with others.

Your Work Environment

The candidate will work in the Bio(in)organic and Medicinal Chemistry (CBM) team within the Laboratory of Molecular Innovation and Applications (LIMA), UMR 7042 CNRS-Universities of Strasbourg and Haute-Alsace, led by Drs. Elisabeth Davioud-Charvet and Mourad Elhabiri. This team develops projects in redox medicinal chemistry to combat various pathogenic parasites in humans and animals and designs fluorogenic prodrugs for imaging. The team is supported by a physicochemistry research facility staffed by a research engineer. In addition to the two CNRS research directors, the group includes one Ph.D. student, three postdoctoral researchers, and four Master 2 students. The LIMA laboratory is located at the School of Chemistry, Polymers, and Materials (ECPM) in Strasbourg, France.
The candidate will work with students and postdoctoral researchers under the supervision of the project leader (Dr. Mourad Elhabiri, CNRS Research Director). The research will focus on the development of bright, clickable fluorescent derivatives whose response depends not only on the bioactivation process of the partner prodrug but also on the redox state of the bioactivated compound. The strengths of the CBM team lie in the complementary expertise at the interface of chemistry, enzymology, and physical chemistry within the team; the diversity of the teams and areas of expertise that make up the LIMA unit; the international recognition of both the team and LIMA; numerous academic and industrial collaborations, and initiatives in technology commercialization, innovation, and technology transfer within the framework of the European EIC PathFinder Open program.
The affiliated doctoral school will be the Strasbourg Doctoral School of Chemical Sciences (EDSC 222). The CNRS Cronenbourg Campus is located in a green setting and is easily accessible by public transportation (Bus G). The candidate will have access to a nearby staff cafeteria at a rate subsidized by CNRS-Alsace and will receive partial reimbursement for transportation costs.

Specific laboratory rules will be covered in the training.
Short-term travel within France and abroad (Belgium, Switzerland) is to be expected during meetings with the European partners of the EIC PathFinder Open project.
