Job Description

Thesis Subject

Constituency is widely taken to be the fundamental unit of syntactic structure. A core assumption in the vast majority of contemporary theories of syntax is that syntactic operations – such as movement, agreement, and coordination – target constituents, i.e. hierarchically defined units rather than arbitrary strings of words.
Nonetheless, this view faces an important empirical challenge: cross-linguistic data reveal configurations in which syntactic operations seemingly target material that does not straightforwardly form a constituent. This dissertation will focus on these configurations, namely on so-called discontinuous noun phrases (DNPs).
The dissertation will seek to refine our understanding of the relationship between hierarchical structure and surface linearization, and to assess the extent to which constituency remains a universal constraint on syntactic computation.

Your Work Environment

The doctoral contract is the result of a collaboration between the SFL laboratory (a joint research unit of the CNRS and Paris 8 University), the BCL laboratory (a joint research unit of the CNRS and University Côte d'Azur), Ilia State University and Tbilisi State University (Georgia).
This project falls within the themes of the IRN CauLaGeNet (Caucasian Languages in and around Georgia Network) co-led by Léa Nash and Jérémy Pasquereau.
The successful candidate will conduct their research under the supervision of Léa NASH (University Paris 8/CNRS) and Nikos ANGELOPOULOS (CNRS) on the syntax of discontinuous nominal phrases in typologically diverse languages.
