Job Description
Thesis Subject
The aim of the PhD thesis is to synthesise hypotheses concerning the seasonality of phytoplankton in order to improve the use of these communities as bioindicators. The project will draw on existing observational data from the PhytOBS (phytoplankton community) and SOMLIT (abiotic factors) National Observation Networks, as well as the ZOONET network (zooplankton grazing).
The successful candidate must have a background in, and solid experience of, the ecology of plankton communities in coastal environments. Ideally, they will be familiar with the hypotheses proposed to explain the functioning and dynamics of these communities. Furthermore, they must be proficient in the tools of computational ecology, particularly the methods required for the description and statistical modelling of multidimensional tables. They must be capable of producing statistical models of temporal diversity patterns, and of distinguishing the effects of environmental drivers from those of neutral processes in community structure. She must be proficient in conducting these analyses within the R environment. She must demonstrate creativity and be able to develop new statistical data-processing tools suited to the description and analysis of the cyclical dynamics of communities and to their integration into the assessment of habitat quality.
