Reactivity of Supplementary Cementitious Materials in Low-Carbon Cements
Project: The development of low-carbon cement through the partial substitution of clinker with supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) is currently the most realistic short-term approach to reducing the carbon footprint of Portland cement production. SCMs used today are highly diverse (mining waste, calcined clays, recycled cement paste, slags, pozzolans, etc.), in order to achieve both higher substitution rates and to meet local economic and geographical constraints.This diversity requires the development of tests and scientific approaches to ensure the mechanical and chemical performance of binders containing these SCMs. The aim of this project is to establish the link between thermodynamic properties (bulk and interfacial) and the reaction kinetics of SCMs. In particular, the work will focus on characterizing the dissolution rate of SCMs and the physical and thermodynamic parameters controlling it (surface charge, specific surface area, composition, structure, saturation index). Ultimately, the goal is to develop a kinetic model describing the reactivity of SCMs in low-carbon binders.
Your Work Environment
Working Environment: This work is part of a bilateral project between the CNRS (France) and the University of Sherbrooke (UdS), involving Dr. C. Labbez and Prof. S. Gauffinet from CNRS, and Prof. F. Georget from UdS, as well as two PhD students. The PhD candidate will be hosted in the INTERFACES Department of the CNRS ICB Laboratory at the University of Bourgogne Europe (Dijon, France). The candidate will be supervised by Prof. S. Gauffinet and CNRS researcher C. Labbez, and will benefit from mentoring by international academic and industrial partners. He will join an active research group working on cement chemistry (4 PhD students) and will have access to fully equipped facilities for physical and chemical characterization of materials, as well as modeling and numerical simulation tools.
