Job Description

Thesis Subject

This doctoral project lies at the intersection of geography, economics, statistical physics, and complexity science. It examines the relationships between residential locations and those of jobs in urban areas, using quantitative methods that allow for comparisons of major French, European, and even global urban areas over recent decades. It draws inspiration from recent research that has revealed the existence of scaling laws in the spatial organization of cities, particularly concerning the succession of land uses from the city center (highly urban land use) to the periphery (primarily natural land uses). The aim of this thesis is to compare a set of indicators of the radial profiles of large urban areas, particularly in France (job density, population density, proportion of artificial surfaces, built-up area, etc.), with land values in order to then examine the empirical relevance of models from urban economics, which explain residential location choices as a compromise between daily mobility (related to distance from the city center) and housing prices (lower in the suburbs, making larger dwellings affordable). The proposed doctoral work thus aims to contribute to the interdisciplinary dialogue in order to consolidate knowledge on infra-urban systems. Through its connection with other research projects of the supervisory team members, it will also contribute to determining the influence of the presence of different types of natural spaces in different contexts (coastal, mountainous, etc.) on urban forms.
