Job Description

Thesis Subject

The neutrino is the only elementary particle that could be identical to its own antiparticle. This property could be revealed by the discovery of an extremely rare radioactive decay: the neutrinoless double-beta decay. The research of such decay is the goal of the SuperNEMO experiment, located at the Modane Underground Laboratory, which has been recording data since April 2025. The experimental setup combines thin source foils of 82-Se placed within a tracking chamber and surrounded by a calorimeter, enabling the unambiguous identification of the two electrons from double-beta decays. The PhD student will be in charge of analyzing the full data set in order to finalize the background model, study the two-neutrino double-beta decay of 82-Se, and search for neutrinoless modes.

Your Work Environment

SuperNEMO project is driven by an international collaboration of a hundred of researchers. The end of data taking being scheduled for January 2027, the student will make a significant contribution into data analysis toward the publication of the final results. The work will involve selecting various event topologies to constrain background and perform detailed study of double-beta decays. GEANT4-based simulations will be used with the software FALAISE developed by SuperNEMO collaboration to support these analyses.

Constraints and risks

Minimal risks associated with software development and data analysis, including code management and version control, as well as data storage, sharing, and backup.
