Description of the thesis topic
The Stellar Physics group at Laboratoire Univers et Particles of Montpellier (LUPM), France, has a PhD position currently accepting applications from motivated candidates interested in working in the astrochemistry of Type II Supernovae, in the local and far universe. The position is funded by the PRC ODUST grant from Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR, PI Dahbia Talbi). The project is multidisciplinary and includes both theoretical and experimental work. The researcher will develop new models of supernova ejecta chemistry that include the formation and processing of molecules and dust, and the ejecta mixing resulting from the explosion. He/she will also be involved in experimental studies of oxygen-rich dust synthesis in the laboratory in Madrid (Spain). Simultaneously, dust structures will be studied by using the methods of theoretical chemistry. The researcher will produce suites of diagnostics that will be used to motivate future JWST proposals.
Work Context
The Stellar Astrophysics group at LUPM studies various aspects of stellar physics that include stellar evolution and magnetic fields, and the astrochemistry of circumstellar media. Observations on large telescopes (VLT(I), CFHT, IRAM, HST) are combined with simulations and modelling on local, national and international infrastructures. The PhD student will be based at LUPM and will work under the guidance of Dahbia Talbi, in close collaboration with Isabelle Cherchneff and Jose Cernicharo (Madrid)
Montpellier is a large historical and cultural city of the Occitanie region, near the Mediterranean Sea.
Additional Information
The starting date is scheduled between 1 May and 1 September 2023.
Candidates should submit a CV including the name of two referees who can be contacted at a later stage, their bachelor and master grades, and a cover letter including a brief account of their master research on the CNRS portal by the closing date (28 February 2023).
