Job Description
Thesis Subject
Improving learning and autonomy by targeting sleep disorders in children with neurodevelopmental disorders
Sleep disorders are among the most common comorbidities in children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), with an estimated prevalence ranging from 30% to 80%. Sleep plays a central role in cognitive, emotional, and behavioral development. In these children, sleep disturbances exacerbate attentional, memory, and behavioral difficulties, hinder academic learning, and weaken social inclusion. They also affect family functioning by increasing parental stress and fatigue.
Despite the availability of effective behavioral interventions, these disorders remain insufficiently addressed. Beyond their functional consequences, they are associated with biological mechanisms that may increase neurodevelopmental vulnerability, particularly through heightened inflammation and reduced neurotrophic support, which can impair the functioning of the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex.
This PhD project aims to develop and evaluate an intervention designed to reduce the impact of sleep disorders in children aged 6 to 10 years with NDDs. It combines a school-based intervention, based on the program www.memetonpyj.fr, with an interactive web application intended to support families in implementing sleep-promoting practices.
The main objective is to assess the effects of this intervention on children's cognitive functioning and daily autonomy, in order to evaluate its functional and ecological benefits. More specifically, the project aims to:
- assess the impact on cognitive functions (attention, memory, behavior);
- examine effects on daily autonomy;
- better understand the biological mechanisms linking sleep, inflammation, and cognitive functioning.
Your Work Environment
The Centre de Recherche en Neurosciences de Lyon (CRNL) is a multidisciplinary research center founded in 2011, dedicated to studying the brain from the molecular level to cognitive functions and behavior. It brings together several hundred researchers, clinicians, and engineers, and combines fundamental and clinical research to better understand brain functioning and associated disorders.
