Job Description

Thesis Subject

All-solid-state batteries using sulfide-based electrolytes are among the most promising technologies in terms of safety and energy density. Unfortunately, they undergo multiple chemical and mechanical degradation processes during cycling. Poor densification promotes these degradation mechanisms; understanding densification is therefore essential to the development of this technology.

We propose a multiscale approach based on operando techniques, including acoustic emission and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), to monitor the densification process. The simultaneous monitoring of pressure, temperature, and conductivity, combined with operando techniques providing structural and morphological information, will offer new insights into this process.
The same methodology will subsequently be applied to investigate the degradation of the solid electrolyte at its interface with the positive electrode.

A Master's degree or engineering degree in engineering, chemistry, or materials science is required to successfully carry out this project. Knowledge of battery systems would also be highly valued.
The successful candidate should be able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment and as part of a team, while progressively developing autonomy in managing their research project. The candidate must also have strong written and spoken English skills.

Your Work Environment

The successful candidate will join the MIEL team (Materials, Interfaces and Electrochemistry) at LEPMI, located on the Grenoble campus. The doctoral researcher will work in an environment to ensure completion of the PhD project and will have access to all LEPMI facilities and equipment.
The doctoral work will involve regular interactions with the PhD supervisor, co-supervisor, and project partners working on related topics. In addition, an Individual Monitoring Committee (Comité de Suivi Individuel, CSI) will be established during the first year to provide independent oversight of the research.
The doctoral researcher will participate in the ANR-funded SoDense project, in partnership with the Institut Lumière Matière in Lyon, the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), and the SOLEIL synchrotron.
