Job Description
Thesis Subject
Seismic interferometry allows for the reconstruction of empirical Green's functions from continuous seismic noise records, thereby enabling the tracking of variations in velocity and attenuation associated with hydrogeological and mechanical processes. Wave equation tomography (WET) represents a major advance over conventional tomographic approaches by accounting for 3D propagation, topography, and heterogeneities. When used in a temporal framework, WET enables the imaging of changes in viscoelastic properties and provides new insights into hydromechanical processes, with direct applications to monitoring groundwater level fluctuations, slope instabilities, and changes in saturation.
Desired Profile: We are seeking a motivated candidate with the following profile:
• Master's degree (or equivalent) in geophysics, physics, applied mathematics, or a
related field.
• Strong interest in seismic monitoring, hydrogeophysics, and numerical modeling.
• Experience in seismic data processing, seismic interferometry, or
inversion methods is a plus.
• Strong programming skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB, C/C++, Fortran
90).
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a
research environment.
• Strong communication and writing skills in English.
Your Work Environment
ISTerre is a Joint Research Unit of the University of Grenoble Alpes, the CNRS, USMB, IRD, and Gustave Eiffel University, located at 1381 Rue de la Piscine, 38400 Saint-Martin d'Hères, and on the Bourget du Lac Science Campus. It is part of the Grenoble Observatory of Universe Sciences (OSUG) and the PAGE Research Cluster at the University of Grenoble Alpes (UGA).
It is organized around nine research and service teams, with the scientific objective of studying the physical and chemical properties of the Earth, particularly by focusing on the interplay between observations of natural objects, experimentation, and the modeling of associated complex processes. ISTerre also carries out Earth observation missions, hosts and maintains national geophysical instrument networks, as well as a data center.
