Job Description

Thesis Subject

Title: Monitoring the fate of mercury in Amazonian fish: from trophic transfer to internal processes.

Mercury (Hg) pollution is considered a major environmental issue, and the Brazilian Amazon is among the most heavily impacted regions worldwide. Despite its recognized impact, the metabolic pathways of Hg in biota remain poorly understood. Most studies so far have focused on marine fish species, and there is a lack of knowledge concerning the fate of Hg in freshwater ecosystems. The main aim of this PhD thesis is to fill this gap by tracking the fate of Hg not only in the trophic chain, but also through the analysis of key organs of the target fish species. Speciation analyses by GC-ICP-MS and stable isotopic characterizations will be carried out. The results are expected to shed light on internal processes, including detoxification mechanisms.

The candidate should have a Master (or BAC+5 homologated) on Analytical/Environmental Chemistry. Previous experience on hyphenated chromatographic techniques, mass spectrometry or stable isotopes would be appreciated. Fluency in English is required.

Your Work Environment

This work will be carried out in the frame on an international and multidisciplinary context, specifically the projects ERC Consolidator Grant SeMER and ANR PRCI SeMerAMAZON (https://anr.fr/Projet-ANR-22-CE34-0020) in close collaboration with Federal University of Western Pará (UFOPA).
The PhD will principally work in Pau (South-West of France) specifically at IPREM, UMR 5254 CNRS/ University of Pau and Pays of Adour where he/she will be member of the Environmental Chemistry and Microbiology Cluster. The working group has a vast experience on environmental and analytical chemistry, trace metal speciation, stable isotope tracers and fractionation mechanisms. To reach the outlined objectives, the project will be supported by the unique instrumental facilities of the host laboratory. This platform possess, among others, the state of the art instruments required for the theses project (MC-ICP-MS, HPLC/GC-ICPMS, LC-ESI-MS/MS).
