Description du sujet de thèse

This PhD project is part of an ANR-funded program addressing a major scientific and societal challenge: plastic pollution. The PhD candidate will be involved from the very beginning of the project, contributing to the development of materials that will serve as the foundation for the different work packages. The work will start with tasks secured by preliminary results and will progressively evolve towards increasing levels of innovation throughout the thesis. The doctoral research will focus on the development and physico-chemical characterization of nanoplastics, including isotopically labeled nanoplastics, produced using emulsion and nanoprecipitation techniques. The PhD candidate will also be responsible for their physico-chemical characterization, as well as for developing protocols to assess their adsorption affinity for trace metals (Nd, Cu, Cd, Fe). Complementary studies will investigate the environmental behavior of these nanoplastics, with particular attention to the kinetics of metal adsorption and desorption, the associated hysteresis effects, and the interferences induced by their flocculation.
ACTIVITIES:
Elaboration of (labeled) nanoplastics using emulsion and nanoprecipitation techniques. Analysis, physicochemical characterization, and investigation of metal adsorption/desorption behavior under representative conditions.
COMPETENCIES :
- Background in Chemistry
- Skills in Polymer Chemistry. In particular, knowledge of polymer synthesis in aqueous dispersed media will be considered an asset.
- Skills in Polymer Characterization. In particular, familiarity with techniques for the characterization of polymer particles will be considered an asset.
- Skills in Environmental Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry (ICP-MS, Py-GC/MS) will be appreciated.
- Ability to interact with teams from different scientific disciplines
- Good level of English and writing quality

Contexte de travail

The research will take place at the IPREM laboratory, UMR CNRS 5254 (website: https://iprem.univ-pau.fr/fr/index.html /). IPREM (Institute of Analytical Sciences and Physico-Chemistry for the Environment and Materials) is a CNRS/UPPA Joint Research Unit (UMR 5254). The laboratory brings together over 300 people working on the development of fundamental knowledge in physico-chemistry, analytical chemistry, and microbiology, with applications related to the structure of living systems, environmental management, and the functional properties of various classes of materials.
IPREM's expertise is built around analytical strategies, modeling, physico-chemical approaches, detailed structural and reactivity studies, polymer material development, characterization, and implementation at different scales. This multidisciplinary approach positions the laboratory uniquely in terms of applications across numerous industrial sectors, both nationally and internationally. The research will be supervised by Aubin Thibault de Chanvalon and Stéphanie Reynaud.
