Thesis Subject
The Solid-State NMR Group at the Institute of Chemistry and Biology of Membranes and Nano-objects (CBMN), Pessac, France, is seeking a highly motivated candidate for a fully funded PhD position within the framework of the ANR-funded NMR-FUNGI project. The project focuses on the development of novel solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methodologies to investigate the molecular organization and remodeling of the fungal cell wall. The successful candidate will be appointed for a 36-month doctoral fellowship.
The fungal cell wall is a complex and dynamic structure composed of proteins, lipids, and polysaccharides that play essential roles in maintaining cell integrity and mediating interactions with the environment. Despite its biological importance, its molecular architecture remains poorly understood due to the lack of techniques capable of probing its organization at atomic resolution.
The objective of this project is to characterize the structural organization and dynamics of the fungal cell wall using state-of-the-art solid-state NMR spectroscopy. By developing and applying advanced NMR methodologies, the project aims to provide unprecedented insights into the architecture and remodeling of this essential cellular structure at the atomic scale.
Your Work Environment
The Institute of Chemistry and Biology of Membranes and Nano-objects (CBMN) is a multidisciplinary research institute at the interface of physics, chemistry, and biology. It hosts 15 research teams and provides access to a comprehensive range of state-of-the-art structural biophysics platforms, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray diffraction, mass spectrometry, electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and other advanced analytical techniques.
The PhD candidate will carry out research within the "NMR of Membranes and Protein Assemblies" group, where the project will focus on the investigation of fungal cell walls using solid-state NMR spectroscopy. The team has access to an extensive NMR infrastructure, including spectrometers operating at magnetic fields from 300 to 800 MHz, all equipped with dedicated solid-state NMR probes, providing an exceptional environment for methodological developments and high-resolution structural studies.
