Description of the thesis topic

Lipid droplets are ubiquitous cellular organelles dedicated to the storage of lipids, and as such play an essential role in cellular metabolism. Although present in most cells, they are most prominent in adipocytes where an LD can reach more than 100 µm in size. We study a family of abundant LD proteins, the perilipins, which interact with LDs using amphipathic helices. The goal of this projects is to study how perilipins control the function and size of lipid droplets in adipocytes using cellular and in vitro approaches.

Work Context

The Montpellier Cell Biology Research Center – CRBM (UMR 5237 between CNRS and the University of Montpellier) is organised in 16 research teams, technological platforms and common services, and counts about 150 people (researchers and teacher-researchers, engineers, technicians and administrative staff, PhD students and post-doctoral fellows). The CRBM is connected with other institutes on the same campus where it shares different platforms, including the MRI imaging platform equipped with the most advanced microscopes and dedicated staff.
The PhD student (M/F) will join Alenka Copic's team "Lipid storage and transfer in the cell". We use different cellular and biochemical models to understand how proteins control the storage and distribution of lipids in eukaryotic cells. It will be carried out in the context of an ERC Synergy collaborative project ('Spheres'), which includes laboratories in France and in Sweden.
