Description du sujet de thèse

This project aims at understanding how a person, child or adult, learns to orally control sound production with a different auditory information (aerial + bone-conducted) than that they intend to communicate to the listener (aerial only). It involves both an experimental and a modeling approach. Experimentally, the student will record and analyze bone-conducted vibrations in humans during either speech, singing and wind instrument playing, develop a sensory modification method in order to elicit behavioral adjustments to a perturbation of the bone-conducted feedback, and investigate the auditory perception of reconstructions of the full auditory feedback. On the modeling side, signal processing, statistics and information theory will be used to separate the sensory information carried by the bone-conducted vs. aerial feedback and clarify the impact of their difference.

Constraints: Abiding by the ethical rules of human experimentation. Risks: contacts with experimental subjects. In case of Covid epidemics, some experiments may have to be canceled and replaced by modeling work
