Description du sujet de thèse

The project to which the doctoral contract relates is based on collaboration between teams from INSHS (Triangle UMR 5206 laboratory at IEP Lyon and RIVES UMR 5600 laboratory at ENTPE), INSIS (Ampère UMR 5005 and INL UMR 5270 laboratories at INSA Lyon and École Centrale de Lyon), and INSB (Département Prévention Cancer Environnement, INSERM U1296).
The aim of the project is to conduct a participatory, interdisciplinary environmental health survey focusing on both occupational health issues and local residents in the industrial basin of southern Lyon. The main field of study is Saint-Fons and Pierre-Bénite, two of the region's industrial towns considered to be working-class and characterized by a high percentage of poverty, according to INSEE data. Numerous companies have long been established in these towns to manufacture chemical products (e.g. Solvay, Arkema, Elkem, KemOne). Some of them have been involved in union action to gain recognition for occupational illnesses caused by toxic exposure. From the 1970s to the present day, there have also been occasional and often short-lived mobilizations by local residents or environmental associations to publicize certain environmental and health pollution problems.
The research project involves :
- set up a network of sensors capable of producing new data on pollution ;
- conduct interviews with employees and local residents to identify specific health problems in an area that has as yet received little research on the health and environmental effects of chronic pollution;
- disseminate the results and encourage new preventive measures.
