Job Description

Thesis Subject

PhD topic: Votive practices in Cypriot sanctuaries of the Classical period
Past studies focussing on Cypriot Iron Age sanctuaries concentrated on their status and importance within the territorial network of the Cypriot kingdoms, on their location and number, on the specific characteristics of their layout and architecture… We can also mention a series of monographic publications: for example, as far as the region addressed by the KIT-2 programme is concerned, the sanctuaries of Kition-Bamboula and Kition-Kathari, or the sanctuary of Apollo-Reshef at Idalion. However, in all these publications, the Classical period (5th-4th cent. BCE) is largely neglected.
The recruited PhD student will study votive practices in Cypriot sanctuaries of the Classical period. He/she will especially scrutinize the material remains of these practices: votives (notably limestone sculpture and terracotta figurines), as well as statue bases. The study will establish a typo-chronology of the votives, the context of their consecration, and their spatial arrangement. Particular attention will be paid to the votives' bases (types, material, methods of attachment, etc.). The PhD student will work together with other members of the team on votive assemblages found during legacy excavations and now stored in French museums (Louvre, BnF) and in the British Museum. He/she will also have access to unpublished material from ongoing excavations.

Your Work Environment

The PhD student will be affiliated with the HiSoMA research unit, with an administrative residence at Lyon, France. He/she will have a workspace with a computer at the MOM premisses.
He/she will take part to the research work of the ANR-DFG programme KIT-2. He/she will also study material in Cypriot museums (Larnaka, Dali, Nicosia), as well as in French (Paris), British (London) and German (Berlin) museums.
