Description du sujet de thèse
The objective of this project is to design and prepare new supported catalysts based on palladium (Pd) and copper (Cu) for the direct conversion of CO₂ into methanol. The proposed approach relies on the functionalization of dehydroxylated oxides through surface organometallic chemistry, using heterobimetallic complexes of Pd or Cu combined with metallic promoters (M). This innovative strategy is expected to yield materials consisting of PdM or CuM alloy phases supported on oxides, with precise control over the Pd/M or Cu/M ratio. The literature indeed emphasizes that the formation of specific phases with a well-defined stoichiometry between the two metals in the active phase is a key factor in achieving high methanol selectivity. The catalytic systems thus prepared will be characterized by a wide range of advanced analytical techniques (EXAFS, XPS, DRIFT, HRTEM, EDX, XRD, CO adsorption, and elemental analysis). The optimization of their catalytic properties will be carried out by tuning the nature of the support and the promoter, the Pd/M or Cu/M ratio, as well as the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of the reaction. This approach will provide deeper insights into the underlying mechanisms and enable the development of more efficient supported bimetallic catalysts for the selective conversion of CO₂ into methanol.
The multidisciplinary nature of this project, at the interface between fundamental research and applied science, requires expertise in organometallic chemistry, support functionalization, and heterogeneous catalysis.
Contexte de travail
The selected candidate will join the Chemistry, Catalysis, Polymers, and Processes Laboratory (CP2M, UMR CNRS 5265) in Villeurbanne, within the theme “Surface Organometallic Chemistry for Catalysis.” Surface organometallic chemistry is a major research axis of CP2M, addressing heterogeneous catalysis from a molecular perspective. This fundamental approach has led the laboratory to develop two complementary directions: surface organometallic chemistry and applied catalysis in various fields, including petrochemistry, environmental science, polymers, and biomass valorization.
The selected candidate will work closely with researchers and PhD students at the laboratory, as well as with international scientists involved in the European “THUNDER” project. Hence, the candidate will participate to the regular meetings within the partners in the project, as well as preparation of the written deliverables.
Contraintes et risques
Profile sought
We are looking for a motivated candidate holding a Master's degree in Chemistry with an excellent academic record. A strong theoretical background combined with practical experience in organometallic synthesis is essential. Experience handling highly air- and moisture-sensitive organometallic compounds, with proficiency in Schlenk techniques and glovebox operations, will be considered an advantage.
Required skills and qualifications
• Master's degree (or equivalent) in organic and organometallic chemistry.
• Excellent command of English, both written and spoken (minimum C1 level), including experience in drafting reports and scientific manuscripts.
• Ability to present results in English at meetings, seminars, and symposia.
• Participation in common laboratory responsibilities (e.g., managing consumable stocks, overseeing shared equipment, etc.).
• Strong organizational skills and willingness to engage in collaborative, interdisciplinary research.
• Autonomy, anticipation, proactive mindset and initiative, ability to make suggestions, and teamwork skills.
Research environment
Selected candidates will join an international and multidisciplinary team. Excellent interpersonal skills and a strong team spirit are expected.
Selection process
Pre-selection will be based on CV, experience, skills, and motivation letter. Shortlisted candidates will then be interviewed by an experienced selection committee.
Application materials
Applications should include:
• A detailed curriculum vitae
• A one-page motivation letter outlining research interests related to the proposed project
• Contact information for two references
• Academic transcripts and other relevant certificates
The position is expected to start in January 2026.
Informations complémentaires
Candidates are invited to submit to the recruiter a motivation letter, a CV (including their scientific output), their Master's internship report (or, if confidential, a brief summary of their research work), as well as the contact details of two references.
