Job Description

Thesis Subject

Cohesin, cellular adaptation and genome dynamics: an integrated study in S. pombe

The objective of this research project is to explore the mechanisms of cellular adaptation to environmental changes in the yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. We hypothesise that rapid adaptive responses involve post-translational modifications (PTMs) of cohesin, a complex essential for chromatin structuring. These PTMs could remodel chromatin architecture by modulating the dynamics and functions of cohesin, thereby enabling the cell to adjust its transcriptional programme in response to stress.
The project is structured around a three-year thesis focusing on:

1. The systematic identification of PTMs induced by various environmental stresses (oxidative, osmotic, thermal, etc.).

2. The functional characterisation of these modifications on Cohesin and on the overall organisation of chromatin.

3. The study of their consequences on cell survival and gene expression.

Ultimately, this work aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the epigenetic and structural mechanisms that enable cells to orchestrate rapid adaptation to stress, and to establish a sustainable collaborative platform for the functional study of PTMs.
