Job Description

Thesis Subject

The DISCOVER ME project, funded by the Horizon Europe program, marks the launch of the first European Horizon Europe project specifically dedicated to myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). ME/CFS is a severe, chronic, and often profoundly disabling illness. To date, its diagnosis relies exclusively on clinical criteria, which frequently results in long delays in diagnosis and places a significant burden on those affected.
The doctoral student will work on mapping EM/CFS and conducting in silico simulations using large-scale logical models. To do so, he or she will need to :
- Develop a comprehensive, computable disease map of ME/CFS, based on multi-omic data and clinical phenotypes, in accordance with Systems Biology Graphical Notation (SBGN) standards.
- Conduct multimodal integrative analyses of validated datasets, focusing on the convergent mechanisms and interactions involved in the pathophysiology of ME/CFS.
- Generate and prioritize new, data-driven hypotheses regarding the causality of the disease and therapeutic targets, using the map-to-model framework.
- Model the heterogeneity of the disease and its progression over time, particularly differences among patient subgroups, to better understand the variability in clinical trajectories and treatment responses.
The successful candidate must :
- Hold a master's degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related field.
- Have experience analyzing omics data, particularly scRNA-seq and/or bulk data.
- Have experience in computational modeling of complex human diseases: agent-based models, Boolean models, and ordinary differential equation models.
- Have programming skills in R and Python.
- Possess strong analytical skills and the ability to work across disciplines.
- Have a very good command of English.
- Be able to work in an interdisciplinary and international environment.

Your Work Environment

As part of the DISCOVER ME program, a Ph.D. position is available at the Center for Integrative Biology (CBI) in Toulouse, a joint CNRS–University of Toulouse research unit dedicated to integrative biology at various scales. The successful candidate will join the Systems Biology division within UMR5077 - MCD and will be supervised by Prof. Anna Niarakis.
