Job Description

Thesis Subject

We are recruiting a PhD student to work on a project at the interface between industry and methodological development, focusing on the selection of enzymes using microfluidics. Carbios is a pioneer in the design and development of enzymatic processes aimed at rethinking the end-of-life management of plastics and textiles. Within the research team, the aim is to engineer enzymes naturally present in our environment to optimise their polymer degradation activity and heat resistance. The activity and thermostability of enzymes are essential assets for their effective and competitive implementation in our industrial processes. At the Paul Pascal Research Centre, over the last few years, the development of ultra-high-throughput screening methodologies has enabled an increase in the rate of enzyme analysis and selection. By moving from a few tests per second using standard methods to several thousand tests per second using microfluidics, the increased number of enzymes analysed enables the rapid identification of variants that stand out from the average population. By developing microfluidic methods tailored to enzymes that degrade plastics, Carbios and the CRPP will establish a comprehensive R&D methodology for identifying new generations of optimised enzymatic catalysts that can be used in improved industrial processes.

Candidate profile
We are looking for a candidate with a background in Science and Technology, who has an interest in interdisciplinary projects. The core of the role will involve microfluidics development and enzymatic biochemistry.

Your Work Environment

Carbios and the Paul Pascal Research Centre (CRPP, CNRS, University of Bordeaux) are joining forces to establish the CEP Joint Laboratory, funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR). The work will be carried out at the CRPP in close collaboration with Carbios' R&D teams. The work will therefore take place at the interface between the academic and industrial worlds, and strong organisational and reporting skills are required.
