Description of the thesis topic

Non-planar polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) are a very competitive research subject. This project plans to combine helicenes and conjugated macrocycles, the induced torsion then transforming a cylindrical ring into a Möbius strip. These first examples of PACs with non-trivial topology will certainly have atypical electronic and chiroptical properties.

We have developed a versatile strategy for the synthesis of large PACs, substituted by carboxylic functions which improve their solubility while modulating their electronic properties. This method has all the prerequisites for this project because it has already resulted in the formation of many types of molecular structures: nanoribbons, poly-helicenes, large conjugated macrocycles.

The Centre de Recherche Paul Pascal (UMR 5031, belonging to the CNRS and the University of Bordeaux) is localised in Pessac (City of Bordeaux), France.
