Job Description
Thesis Subject
This dissertation will develop a coupled, distributed glacio-hydrological modeling framework that combines physical glacier modeling with physics-informed machine learning using differentiable programming (Universal Differential Equations). Using the ODINN.il glacier model, the Ph.D. student will improve ice thickness inversions and future projections for glaciers in the Alps and the Andes by integrating heterogeneous datasets (surface velocities, radar thicknesses, mass balances, DTMs). ODINN. It will then be coupled with a differentiable hydrological model calibrated using an LSTM to simulate glacial runoff and its downstream hydrological impact.
Your Work Environment
Glacio-hydrological models are essential for translating climate projections into actionable information on water resources, particularly in high-mountain regions where glacier melt significantly influences river flow. However, existing models often lack the resolution and physical detail needed to accurately represent key glacial processes at the watershed scale.
