Job Description

Thesis Subject

The objective of this thesis is to understand the mechanisms of drainage and rupture of surface bubbles and vertical liquid films formed in binary liquids, at centimeter- and millimeter-scale levels. Experimental set-ups will be developped to study these liquid films and measure their thickness, using techniques such as interferferometry. Experiments will be conducted to determine their lifetimes and thinning dynamics. The contribution of marginal regenerations (areas of reduced thickness forming near the menisci) to this thinning dynamics will be quantified. The results will be analyzed in light of those obtained in the numerical task of the ANR project.

Your Work Environment

The project is part of the Coliflow collaborative project funded by the ANR. It will be conducted at the SVI laboratory, a joint unit of the CNRS and Saint-Gobain, located at the Saint-Gobain research center in Aubervilliers. It will be developed in close collaboration with the ANR's partner laboratories (SIMM and PMHH at ESPCI) and frequent meetings will be held in Paris or Aubervilliers with the other members of the ANR, including tenured researchers, postdocs, doctoral students, and interns.
The SVI Laboratory comprises about fifteen permanent and non-permanent members, who are either CNRS or Saint-Gobain staff. The research areas focus, on the one hand, on the growth and optical properties of thin films and structured surfaces and, on the other hand, on issues involving mass transfer and hydrodynamics in soft matter systems.
Laboratory members have access to the facilities at the Saint-Gobain center (including scientific equipment, meeting rooms, and the company cafeteria). The successful candidate will report to Laurence Talini and be supervised by Laurence Talini and Martin Coux.
