Job Description

Summary of the scientific project

The position involves physics analyses to measure the couplings of the Higgs boson and to search physics with CERN's LHC collider. Using data from the ATLAS experiment collected during Run 3 and the High-Luminosity (HL-LHC) phase, the successful candidate will have the for new opportunity to make leading contributions to particle physics , building on the expertise of the local ATLAS team. The candidates should define their project with that team in one of the labs (CPPM or LPNHE).
Thanks to demonstrated experience and a strong interest in instrumentation, he or she will contribute to the finalization of the ATLAS detector upgrades for the HL-LHC phase, their installation, and their commissioning. Drawing on the technological expertise of the laboratory and the institute, as well as emerging developments worldwide, he/she will simultaneously conduct significant R&D on innovative detectors for the future, particularly in connection with the possible future FCC-ee collider at CERN.

Summary of the teaching project

The successful candidate will be involved in existing teaching programs related to the research theme at the host laboratory's university campus. The teaching plan will be discussed with the institution's academic staff and further defined to ensure it aligns with the selected candidate's profile.

Host Lab Strategy

For the two host laboratories (CPPM, LPNHE), the topics covered by this CPJ are key priorities in their scientific strategy, and their ATLAS research team is heavily involved in data analysis on this topic (Higgs and new physics), as well as in cutting-edge instrumental developments for the ATLAS upgrades for HL-HLC. These developments are the result of R&D in the laboratories on specific aspects, stemming from particular engineering expertise that will need to be mobilized to prepare the detectors for a future collider. At CPPM: CMOS pixels, microelectronics, noble liquid calorimetry, readout electronics for very high-flux of data, AI embedded on FPGAs, precision mechanics and system integration. At LPNHE: thin silicon sensors, LGAD sensors, picosecond time measurement, dense interconnects, metrology. At both labs: microchannel cooling, real-time analysis systems on hybrid CPU/GPU architectures, simulations and performance studies.

Institution Strategy

Particle physics focuses on the structure and origin of matter and interactions. The scalar sector associated with the Higgs boson plays a special role and could be a gateway to new physics.
This is a major area of research for CNRS Nuclei & Particles, which relies in particular on the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN's LHC accelerator. The current operation of the LHC (Run 3), as well as the preparation of the experiments for its high-luminosity phase (HL-LHC, 2029–2041), involve nearly 400 physicists, engineers and technicians at IN2P3. The collected data will enable significant advances in our understanding of the scalar sector, but a dedicated electron-positron collider, known as a Higgs factory, will offer a tenfold increase in precision. This machine has been identified as a priority by the European strategy and could take shape in the form of the FCC-ee project at CERN, with a construction that could begin around 2035. IN2P3 intends to play a leading role in the design of detectors for such a machine or an alternative. The institute has strong expertise in microelectronics, electronics, mechanics, high-data-rate acquisition, real-time computing, embedded AI.
The ATLAS teams in the host laboratories are actively involved in studies of the Higgs sector at the LHC and are developing key detector components (tracking and calorimetry) for the HL-LHC upgrades. They draw on strong technical expertise and ongoing R&D work on innovative detectors; taking place within the laboratories, through the institute's network of laboratories, and in cooperation with other national and international partners.
Leveraging these capabilities to foster a coherent national effort across the institute toward proposing innovative solutions for future detectors is of strategic importance for CNRS Nuclei & Particles.

International Strategy

The project is de facto part of a major international collaborations, the ATLAS collaboration (more than 3,000 researchers from 40 countries), where there is a strong sense of competition and a wealth of talent with international mobility. Consequently, the recruitment pool is substantial and of very high quality, highly international, therefore the project fulfills the requirement of attracting top talent. The institute's ability to be a key-player in the analyses within the ATLAS collaboration, to take on leadership roles, and to drive major developments in detector technology is also internationally recognized and highly attractive.
Many of the institute's programs (IRN Terascale, joint projects with our IRLs, such as ILANCE with the University of Tokyo for ATLAS) are assets for carrying out this project. Within the framework of ATLAS, the laboratories have established numerous specific international collaborations, often in conjunction with universities (particularly in Latin America for ATLAS/LPNHE, Romania for ATLAS/CPPM as well as other countries via the Civis alliance).

Research Policy

Open Science

The CNRS is developing a strong policy in favor of open science. Open science consists of making research results "as accessible as possible and closed as necessary". As such, the CNRS aims to make 100% of the texts of publications resulting from the work of its laboratories accessible , in particular through deposit in HAL. The data produced must also be made available and reusable, except for specific restrictions. In addition, the guiding principles of individual evaluation have been revised in accordance with the DORA declaration, to be more qualitative and to take into account all facets of the researcher's profession.

Science and society

The relationship between science and society is now recognized as a full dimension of scientific activity. The project will develop this dimension in synergy with all the partners. The resulting research work will contribute to informing public decision-making. Participatory science initiatives may be initiated with actors from the project’s socio-economic and cultural eco-system.

Scientific dissemination

The dissemination of the results will be done through world-class scientific productions: publications, patents, software... In addition, the results will be communicated to various targets such as scientific communities, media, decision makers, general public, schools, etc., with an adapted calendar. Specific tools may be developed such as websites, newsletters, meetings, international symposia, summer schools and conferences.
