Job Description

Summary of the scientific project

Candidates must propose a research project in line with the priorities of one of the three host laboratories: CRHEA in Valbonne, C2N in Palaiseau, and IEMN in Lille. The research project must demonstrate originality and the ability to advance the state of the art in the epitaxial synthesis of semiconductor and/or topological materials of different dimensionalities, and contribute to the emergence of new application concepts in microelectronics, photonics, and quantum technologies.

Summary of the teaching project

Candidates must propose a teaching project (28 hours of lectures or 42 hours of laboratory or tutorial work) related to the broad themes of the EPIMAT Junior Professor Chair. This teaching collaborative projects and regularly host foreign researchers within this framework. Applications from researchers currently based abroad are strongly encouraged.

Potential host facilities

  • INP - CNRS Physique
  • CRHEA - Centre de recherche sur l'hétéroepitaxie et ses applications
  • IEMN - Institut d'Electronique de Microélectronique et de Nanotechnologie
  • C2N - Centre de Nanosciences et de Nanotechnologies

Your Profil

Profile Required

Holders of a doctorate or a PhD or equivalent degree or applicants who have gained scientific qualifications or carried out scientific work deemed to be of an equivalent level. There is no restriction on the age or nationality of applicants. All CNRS positions are accessible to people with disabilities, with special arrangements for tests made necessary by the nature of the disability

Your Work Environment

Host Lab Strategy

The three laboratories that may host the recipient of the EPIMAT Junior Professor Chair are: the Center for Research on Heteroepitaxy and its Applications (CRHEA) in Valbonne https://www.crhea.cnrs.fr/, the Center for Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies (C2N) in Palaiseau https://www.c2n.universite-paris-saclay.fr/, and the Institute of Electronics, Microelectronics, and Nanotechnology (IEMN) in Lille https://www.iemn.fr/ . These laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art growth facilities and complementary expertise, enabling the development of ambitious research at the interface between materials science and device physics and engineering. It is strongly recommended to contact the prospective host laboratory as soon as the call for applications is published.

Institution Strategy

The opening of a CNRS Junior Professor Chair in semiconductor epitaxy and/or emerging quantum materials, including topological materials, is part of a broader context of strategic challenges for advanced electronic, photonic, and quantum technologies. The importance of a sovereign strategy on “materials of the future” is fully recognized by the CNRS, which has made it one of its six cross-cutting challenges within the framework of its Medium-Term Objectives and Performance Contract.
In a context of intense international competition and technological sovereignty, the epitaxy of materials of interest for future generations of devices is also a well-identified priority within the Electronics and Quantum PEPRs. This chair will also promote close integration between growth, structural characterization, and studies of electronic and optical properties. It will help shape cutting-edge research at the interface between physics and engineering, materials science, and micro-nano-technologies. The chair will attract a leading researcher capable of developing original experimental approaches. It will strengthen national and international collaborations around materials of interest. Finally, it will contribute to research-based training in a key area for scientific and industrial innovation.
Laboratories eligible to host this chair have state-of-the-art epitaxial growth facilities and a scientific environment encompassing materials physics and engineering. The research project must fully leverage the host laboratory's specific strengths with the dual objective of advancing knowledge - the primary mission of the CNRS - and contributing to the development of new application concepts and innovative components.

International Strategy

The CNRS's international policy aims to increase the impact and relevance of its research by fostering exchanges with research teams around the world. Two-thirds of the 55,000 scientific publications produced by CNRS-affiliated laboratories result from international collaborations. The CNRS has more than 80 international laboratories located in nearly 50 countries. The host laboratories under consideration for the EPIMAT Junior Professor Chair all have international collaborative projects and regularly host foreign researchers within this framework. Applications from researchers currently based abroad are strongly encouraged.

Research Policy

Open Science

The CNRS is developing a strong policy in favor of open science. Open science consists of making research results "as accessible as possible and closed as necessary". As such, the CNRS aims to make 100% of the texts of publications resulting from the work of its laboratories accessible , in particular through deposit in HAL. The data produced must also be made available and reusable, except for specific restrictions. In addition, the guiding principles of individual evaluation have been revised in accordance with the DORA declaration, to be more qualitative and to take into account all facets of the researcher's profession.

Science and society

The relationship between science and society is now recognized as a full dimension of scientific activity. The project will develop this dimension in synergy with all the partners. The resulting research work will contribute to informing public decision-making. Participatory science initiatives may be initiated with actors from the project’s socio-economic and cultural eco-system.

Scientific dissemination

The dissemination of the results will be done through world-class scientific productions: publications, patents, software... In addition, the results will be communicated to various targets such as scientific communities, media, decision makers, general public, schools, etc., with an adapted calendar. Specific tools may be developed such as websites, newsletters, meetings, international symposia, summer schools and conferences.
