Job Description

Summary of the scientific project

Particle physics is at a pivotal moment in its evolution. Increasingly precise experiments and observations are becoming available and must be compared with increasingly refined theoretical calculations to verify their conformity with existing theories and identify possible new frontiers.
The junior professorship aims to support this effort by recruiting a theorist working on these types of problems, whether lattice gauge theories (including non-perturbative QCD), symmetry breaking phenomena, with a focus on electroweak symmetry beyond the Standard Model, model building and the phenomenology of theories beyond the Standard Model (including flavor physics and neutrino physics), or astroparticle physics and its consequences for cosmology, using analytical and/or numerical tools. Innovative approaches based on recent developments (e.g., machine learning, tensor networks, or quantum information) are welcome, as are links with experimental or observational programs.
Applicants will propose a research project that integrates with one or more of the host laboratories.

Summary of the teaching project

The successful candidate will be involved in existing teaching programs related to the research theme at the host laboratory's university campus. The teaching plan will be discussed with the institution's academic staff and further defined to ensure it aligns with the selected candidate's profile.

Host Lab Strategy

The four host laboratories (CPT, LPENS, LPSC, LUPM) have made the development of the theme of this junior professorship a strong focus of their scientific policy. All have active research groups in subjects having overlaps with this domain, with whom the successful candidate will be able to collaborate.

Institution Strategy

Particle physics focuses on the structure and origin of matter and interactions. These ultimate constituents prevailed at the beginning of the universe, making the discipline inherently connected to cosmology and astrophysics. Despite its success in describing elementary particles and predicting certain observables with remarkable precision, the Standard Model is likely not the ultimate theory. It must be extended to account for the baryon asymmetry of the universe, the inferred existence of dark matter, neutrino masses, and more.
While experimental searches for particles beyond the Standard Model have so far been inconclusive, theory plays a crucial role in formulating research directions. In this regard, the full range of activities in theoretical particle physics is essential. This includes gauge theories and the question of symmetry breaking, as well as model building and the resulting phenomenology. It also encompasses more specific areas where new physics might first manifest indirectly, such as discrepancies between observations and predictions.
Two recent examples involve QCD corrections and non-perturbative lattice aspects related to measurements of the muon's anomalous magnetic moment (g-2), as well as flavor physics models that could incorporate potential non-universality of flavors in the lepton sector. Additionally, the topic of scalar fields—following the discovery of the Higgs boson—remains fundamental, with a possible link to the mechanisms of cosmic inflation.
These developments in theoretical physics are at the heart of the strategy of CNRS Physics and CNRS Nuclear & Particles, and are pursued in many laboratories in collaboration with university partners. The proposed CPJ will strengthen this thematic in one of these laboratories.

International Strategy

Theoretical particle physics is a domain in great development worldwide, in particular in several foreign institutions with which CNRS has strong collaborative schemes (IRL, IRC). At CNRS Physics and CNRS Nuclear & Particles, several international research projects include this thematics in their scientific programs.

Research Policy

Open Science

The CNRS is developing a strong policy in favor of open science. Open science consists of making research results "as accessible as possible and closed as necessary". As such, the CNRS aims to make 100% of the texts of publications resulting from the work of its laboratories accessible , in particular through deposit in HAL. The data produced must also be made available and reusable, except for specific restrictions. In addition, the guiding principles of individual evaluation have been revised in accordance with the DORA declaration, to be more qualitative and to take into account all facets of the researcher's profession.

Science and society

The relationship between science and society is now recognized as a full dimension of scientific activity. The project will develop this dimension in synergy with all the partners. The resulting research work will contribute to informing public decision-making. Participatory science initiatives may be initiated with actors from the project’s socio-economic and cultural eco-system.

Scientific dissemination

The dissemination of the results will be done through world-class scientific productions: publications, patents, software... In addition, the results will be communicated to various targets such as scientific communities, media, decision makers, general public, schools, etc., with an adapted calendar. Specific tools may be developed such as websites, newsletters, meetings, international symposia, summer schools and conferences.
