Stratégie d'établissement
The formalization of ecological and evolutionary processes using bio-mathematical, bio-statistical and bio-informatics approaches is a historic and fundamental component of our field, essential for understanding the complexity of living systems on time and space scales that are difficult to observe. Modeling, scenario-building and prediction are now at the heart of many scientific and societal challenges, and rely on the availability of unprecedented data (increasingly massive, heterogeneous and therefore complex to analyze and synthesize) and new methodological opportunities (e.g. deep learning). To take full advantage of these opportunities, it is vital to maintain and even strengthen the CNRS's research potential at the interface between modeling (in the broadest sense), ecology and evolution.
Stratégie du laboratoire d'accueil
The Laboratoire d'Écologie Alpine (LECA, UMR5553) aims to understand the dynamics of biodiversity in the face of environmental change across spatial and temporal scales. The LECA exploits megadata characterising ecosystems by integrating remote sensing, new observation methods (eDNA, metagenomics, acoustics, phototraps) and artificial intelligence to model biodiversity.
The Laboratoire Jean Kuntzmann (LJK, UMR5224) is a research unit in applied mathematics, whose research teams include several themes linked to ecology and life sciences, such as the analysis and processing of life data: omics, pharmacology, oncology, cell biology, cognitive sciences, psychology, phonetics, neurosciences and the environment. The LJK and the LECA work together within the UGA's multidisciplinary artificial intelligence institute.
Stratégie Internationale
The selected candidate of the Chair will have to implement actions and partnerships in the thematic field, and in particular to submit a project in response to European calls (ERC, Horizon Europe Consortium, etc.) during the 5 years of his/her contract. He/she should be part of the site (Grenoble) or national (ASSAI) policy aimed at developing the use of AI in the field of evolutionary biology or ecology.
His/her involvement in any international training courses on the subject is expected.

Résumé du projet scientifique
Recent advances in data science, combined with the revolution in digital and satellite technologies, have enhanced the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in ecology and evolutionary biology. However, the rapid expansion of development projects, agriculture and urban areas is threatening biodiversity in the short term. On more theoretical aspects, imagining new modelling methods to link the latest genomic, phylogenetic or phenotypic data will enable us to take a step forward in our understanding of the evolutionary processes that exist at different scales, for example whether macro-evolutionary trends are governed by the principles of micro-evolution.
Résumé du projet d'enseignement
The person recruited will be involved in high-level teaching with a mathematical specialization, preferentially related to . He/she may also be asked to offer interdisciplinary teaching in the areas covered by the Chair. (biology interface, statistics, modelling, complex data processing, databases, etc.).
Environnement Financier
- Total financé (dont package ANR) : 200 k€

Diffusion scientifique
The dissemination of the results will be done through world-class scientific productions: publications, patents, software... In addition, the results will be communicated to various targets such as scientific communities, media, decision makers, general public, schools, etc., with an adapted calendar. Specific tools may be developed such as websites, newsletters, meetings, international symposia, summer schools and conferences.
Science ouverte
The CNRS is developing a strong policy in favor of open science. Open science consists of making research results "as accessible as possible and closed as necessary". As such, the CNRS aims to make 100% of the texts of publications resulting from the work of its laboratories accessible , in particular through deposit in HAL. The data produced must also be made available and reusable, except for specific restrictions. In addition, the guiding principles of individual evaluation have been revised in accordance with the DORA declaration, to be more qualitative and to take into account all facets of the researcher's profession.
Science et société
The relationship between science and society is now recognized as a full dimension of scientific activity. The project will develop this dimension in synergy with all the partners. The resulting research work will contribute to informing public decision-making. Participatory science initiatives may be initiated with actors from the project’s socio-economic and cultural eco-system.
Indicateurs
The activity will be evaluated in particular on the basis of scientific production (publications, software, patents, etc.), on institutional and private partnerships formalized by contracts, on international presence, on the promotion of work to multidisciplinary scientific communities, on innovation and its transfer to society and on scientific dissemination to non-specialist audiences.
