Stratégie d'établissement

Cybersecurity has been one of the CNRS's scientific priorities for many years, taking several forms: thematic priority "a safer world" in the CNRS's 2019-2023 Contract of Objectives and Performance, regular recruitment of researchers and research support engineers (several CNRS medals to researchers in the field: Silver Medal in 2021 and 2022, Gold Medal in 2006), creation of the "computer security" research group (GDR), creation of joint laboratories with companies in the field, and recently the co-piloting of the Cybersecurity PEPR as part of the national Cybersecurity acceleration strategy.
The theme addressed in this CPJ, computer security at the software-hardware interface, is strategic because it concerns families of attacks that are very important and yet poorly anticipated, and it is therefore important to strengthen our research forces (internationally very visible) on this subject, which will be brought to a higher level in the coming years.

Stratégie du laboratoire d'accueil

The laboratories targeted by this CPJ (CRIStAL, LAAS, TIMA, VERIMAG) all have activities and expertise recognized at the national and international level in relation to the theme concerned, with the need to reinforce the competences on the question of sofware side-channel attacks. Thus, the envisaged recruitment is in perfect coherence with the ambition to reinforce the theme of computer security at the software-hardware frontier by relying on the related expertise present in the unit.

Stratégie Internationale

The CNRS welcomes and recruits a large number of international researchers. More than 30% of those recruited come from abroad. This recruitment will have the same ambition.

Résumé du projet scientifique

Cybersecurity is an essential requirement for all current systems, both for the hardware and the software layers. Traditionally, research focuses on one of these layers and requires, for the hardware layer, physical access to the hardware (in order to make measurements or introduce disturbances). However, there are information leaks and fault-based attacks that use components without requiring physical access to them. This type of attack can thus be carried out by software and are thus remotely executable (typically by running a javascript code present on a simple web page). These new families of attacks, at the interface between software and hardware, are probably one of the most important - and perhaps least anticipated - threats of the decade.

Résumé du projet d'enseignement

The teaching activities of the person recruited will be part of the dynamics of training in the digital field in one of the institutions of the host laboratory.

Environnement Financier

  • Total financé (dont package ANR) : 200 k€
  • Total du projet : 200 k€

Diffusion scientifique

The dissemination of the results will be done through world-class scientific productions: publications, patents, software... In addition, the results will be communicated to various  targets such as scientific communities, media, decision makers, general public, schools, etc., with an adapted calendar. Specific tools may  be developed such as websites, newsletters, meetings, international symposia, summer schools and conferences.

Science ouverte

The CNRS is developing a strong policy in favor of open science. Open science consists of making research results "as accessible  as possible and closed as necessary". As such, the CNRS aims to make 100% of the texts of publications resulting from the work of its laboratories accessible , in particular through deposit in HAL. The data produced must also be made available and reusable, except for specific restrictions. In addition, the guiding principles of individual evaluation have been revised in accordance with the DORA declaration, to be more qualitative and to take into account all facets of the researcher's profession.

Science et société

The relationship between science and society is now recognized as a full dimension of scientific activity. The project will develop this dimension in synergy with all the partners. The resulting research work will contribute to informing public decision-making. Participatory science initiatives may be initiated with actors from the project’s socio-economic and cultural eco-system .

Indicateurs

The activity will be evaluated in particular on the basis of scientific production (publications, software, patents, etc.), on institutional and private partnerships formalized by contracts, on international presence, on the promotion of work to  multidisciplinary scientific communities, on innovation and its transfer to society and on scientific dissemination to non-specialist audiences.
