Job Description

Missions

Design and develop a library of generic tools for determining plasma parameters derived from instrument suites onboard space missions. Participate in the operations of ESA's Comet Interceptor space mission and the production of scientific data products. The engineer hired will be responsible for the design and development of various applications. These applications will be dedicated to: - analyzing data from a mutual impedance probe to derive plasma environment parameters (electron density and temperature), and intercalibrating data from various types of instruments to characterize electric fields; - generating various datasets for the scientific community. The tools will be developed as part of the Comet Interceptor mission's operations but will aim for methodological and technical flexibility to allow adaptation to various space mission profiles. During the Comet Interceptor operational phase, the engineer will routinely produce datasets and distribute them to the mission's data center.

Activity

- Oversee software development throughout the entire lifecycle, from the definition phase through deployment in production environments o Analyze requirements and contribute to the development of the requirements specification, in collaboration with users o Define the software architecture for data analysis tools and guide technical decisions o Oversee solution design, as well as ongoing and corrective maintenance of completed developments - Design methods for modeling, calculating, and visualizing results - Oversee the testing and functional validation phases of the solution - Draft technical documentation - Organize functional acceptance testing of the software - Provide support to laboratory staff on the use of the software

Your Profil

Skills

Knowledge In-depth knowledge of software engineering methods and techniques Proficiency in Python and C/C++ programming languages Proficiency in software development methodologies (agile methodology, unit and functional testing, version control, continuous integration, DevOps) Knowledge of algorithms and databases; Knowledge of mathematics/physics and scientific computing; Familiarity with Windows and Linux operating systems; Knowledge of project management methodologies; Knowledge of quality methods, standards, and procedures; English: B2-level (CEFR) written and oral comprehension and expression; Operational Skills: Lead a project; Master written and oral communication techniques; Developing or adapting new techniques Ability to interact in an international context (proficiency in English); Monitoring technological developments Interpersonal Skills: Independence and organizational skills Methodological rigor and analytical thinking Ability to work in a team and interact with a variety of scientific and technical stakeholders Ability to adapt to changing project needs and constraints.

Your Work Environment

The Laboratory of Environmental and Space Physics and Chemistry (LPC2E) designs, builds, and operates scientific instruments aboard several space missions: Parker Solar Probe, BepiColombo, Solar Orbiter, and JUICE. It is also involved in the European Space Agency's Comet Interceptor mission, which aims to fly by a comet (launch scheduled for late 2028). LPC2E is responsible for operating the mutual impedance (MI) probe on board the spacecraft. It also coordinates the COMPLIMENT instrument consortium, dedicated to the study of cometary plasma. It oversees the analysis and generation of data from the consortium and ensures its consistency and delivery to the mission's data center. In this context, the engineer hired will lead the development of data processing tools for data from various electrical sensors, adaptable to different space missions. In particular, these tools can be tested and validated using data from upcoming missions (BepiColombo and JUICE, which will enter their scientific operations phases in 2027 and 2031, respectively) or past missions (Rosetta), which carry instrument suites comparable to those of the COMPLIMENT consortium.
Work Environment: LPC2E is a joint research unit with a staff of 90, whose research focuses on terrestrial and planetary atmospheres, space plasma physics, and astrophysics. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with the scientific and technical teams responsible for operating the mutual impedance probes developed at LPC2E (5 scientists, instrument engineers, and computer scientists) and in close collaboration with the international teams (Sweden, the Czech Republic, Belgium) participating in the COMPLIMENT consortium. The engineer hired will be assigned to the Applied Computing team at LPC2E (6 engineers) and will report to the Deputy Technical Director. The work will be carried out in support of the National Observation Service associated with the Comet Interceptor mission, hosted at the Observatory of the Centers of the Universe in the Centre-Val de Loire Region (OSUC). The position is located in Orléans La Source, on the CNRS campus. Remote work is permitted and compensated. Health insurance (supplemental), employee benefits, and partial reimbursement of transportation costs are provided.
