Main focus of the research team
The hired candidate will mainly contribute to the activities of the WP8 - External dimension of the crisis and more specifically on the “refugee crisis” of 2011 onwards that is mainly and overwhelmingly located in the Middle East. The region itself has a long history of displacement and migration, that will be explored. European migration cooperation with the Near Eastern and Middle Eastern countries has recently developed in the course of the Syrian refugee crisis. It has mostly been described in reports and in the grey literature through technocratic and depoliticised narrative, emphasising 1. the role of hospitable Arab Near Eastern States (Jordan, Lebanon notably) that welcomed hundreds of thousands of Syrians, with a long-standing tradition of refugee hosting including Palestinians and Iraqis 2. The role of NOGs and international organisations. This task aims at re-politicising the policies of asylum and labour migration in the sub-region. These analyses will vary in scales (local-regional-international) but they will all be framed around the developments linked the various regional initiatives of the EU including the Lebanon Compacts.
