Job Description
Missions
The researcher will contribute to a project aimed at elucidating the replication mechanisms of arboviruses in human and mosquito models. Their work will focus on identifying new therapeutic targets and intervention pathways to block the transmission cycle of these pathogens, with the goal of developing innovative antiviral strategies.
Activity
Develop reverse genetics systems for mosquito-borne viruses.
• Perform virus passaging followed by sequencing (NextSeq) to understand genetic constraints of replication.
• Purify replication organelles of viruses and perform proteomics.
• Perform computational approaches to integrate genetics and structural biology data towards building more complete models of replication.
• Validate results in vivo mosquito models using a range of microscopy and biochemical techniques.
Your Profil
Skills
Qualifications / Knowledge:
• Strong foundation in molecular and cellular biology
• Knowledge of entomology
English level B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages; B1 corresponds to an independent user level.
Operational Skills / Know-how:
• Expertise in molecular biology (cloning, PCR, sequencing, gene expression analysis).
• Skills in experimental entomology and infection models (rearing and maintenance of mosquito colonies under controlled conditions).
• Ability to design and conduct experiments independently.
• Experimental rigor and scientific writing (publications, reports, presentations in English).
Soft Skills:
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively and work in a team.
• Enthusiasm for studying virus evolution.
Your Work Environment
The researcher (M/F) will join the Mechanisms of Positive-Strand RNA Virus Laboratory (M+RVL) team within Research Unit UPR9022, based at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology (IBMC) on the Esplanade campus in Strasbourg and led by Dr William Bakhache. This unit studies the molecular and cellular basis of host defences against infections in arthropods (the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, other Drosophila species and the tiger mosquito Aedes aegypti). It comprises 60 staff members across 6 research teams.
