Job Description

Missions

The team 'Evolution of translation initiation systems in eukaryotes of the 'Architecture et Réactivité de l'ARN' department (UPR 9002 of CNRS) of the 'Institut de Biologie Moléculaire et Cellulaire' (IBMC) of Strasbourg, France, is recruiting a Post-doctoral Researcher for the study of the structure-function relationships of ribonucleic complexes during the translation initiation stage in higher eukaryotes. The project will consist in structurally and functionally characterizing macromolecular complexes allowing the initiation of translation initiation of translated model messenger RNAs in Neurodegenerative Disease patients.

Activity

The approaches used will be based on the use of cell-free translation extracts that will allow us to assemble and purify translation initiation complexes on our model messenger RNAs. The composition of these complexes will be determined by mass spectrometry and their structure by advanced structural approaches. The techniques used will be :

- biochemical and molecular biology methods dedicated to the study of proteins and nucleic acids and in particular RNA
- preparation of in vitro cell-free translation extracts
- purification of ribonucleic complexes suitable for structural studies by cryo electron microscopy

The candidate will have to develop his/her project independently and will participate in the supervision of students and technical staff.

Your Profil

Skills

This includes the mastery of biochemical and molecular biology approaches for the purification of ribonucleoprotein complexes. Strong expertise in structural biology (Crystallography/Cryo-Electron Microscopy) especially on macromolecular complexes containing the ribosome will be considered as a plus. Ideally, the candidate should also be able to interpret electron density maps to establish atomic models of ribonucleic complexes containing the ribosome. Finally, applicants who have demonstrated the ability to write research project funding applications will be given priority.

Your Work Environment

The candidate will join a biochemistry and molecular biology team specialized in translation initiation in eukaryotes. The implementation of the structural part of this project will rely mainly on the skills of the candidate who will have to carry out this project independently.
UPR9002 (RNA Architecture and Responsiveness) is a CNRS unit located in Strasbourg within the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology (IBMC), focused on the study of RNA regulation in various organisms (bacteria, viruses, and eukaryotes).
The unit currently consists of 12 teams and comprises approximately 120 people, nearly half of whom are permanent researchers, as well as more than 30 doctoral students. Several scientific platforms and facilities are available at the IBMC, including a proteomics platform, an insectarium, and a mouse animal facility. Other specialized equipment is also available within the research units, such as the MBioFast platform dedicated to biophysical analyses of RNAs and RNA-protein complexes.
The site is easily accessible by public transportation. The candidate will benefit from CNRS employee benefits (meals, vacation, and RTT, etc.).
