On-surface synthesis has emerged as a powerful way to produce new functional nanomaterials and extended molecular structures, which cannot be prepared by “conventional” in-solution synthetic chemistry. However, methods available for functional modifications in a given covalent framework on surface are extremely rare, which inherently limits the modularity of multistep synthetic strategies on surfaces. Our project will develop new and widely-applicable tools for on-surface synthesis on insulating substrates, using photoreactive polar sulfoxides as sacrificial chemical reagents to trigger selective reactions in-situ.
The project thus aims at:
1) synthesizing sulfoxides and characterizing their structural, electronic and optical properties in solution and on insulating substrates in order to investigate their photoreactivity as compared with their photochemical behavior in solution;
2) exploiting sulfoxides as photoactivatable oxygen transfer agents for in-situ functional modifications of a variety of (metallo-)organic structures on insulating substrates;
3) exploiting sulfoxides as photocleavable vector ligands for the delivery of catalytically-active metal atoms on insulating substrates.

The candidate must have an excellent background in molecular chemistry in order to design, synthesize, purify and characterize the target compounds. Skills in photochemistry are also expected.

Work Context

This research is carried out as part of the research program funded by the ANR (CROSS, 2021-2025), in collaboration with IM2NP (Marseille, https://www.im2np.fr/fr/equipe-nanostructuration-nano) and LHFA (Toulouse, https://lhfa.cnrs.fr/index.php/equipes/ecoih).
The candidate will work at CEMES, as a member of the NanoSciences Group.
