Your Work Environment

Given the limits of 4G cellular networks, the arising of many new applications (IoT, video streaming, …), and the need of a complete Earth coverage, the 5th generation of cellular networks has been proposed. Even if a very light version is already commercially provided, most of its design and development is still to be done, especially on aspects as service classes management, security, services virtualization, or even the full Earth coverage thanks to low Earth orbits satellites constellations.
5G then includes cloud services, massive data, and IoT, what multiplies its related threats. Estimating the new attack surface is then a mandatory preliminary task to do before any security related research activity.
In addition, with its open architecture, its softwarization concepts together with new physical principles integration, many new research topics on security and resilience are fully open. This is first the case with slicing concepts that allows the creation of several different networks on the same infrastructure, and the concepts of virtualization create new risks. Also, with the concept of distributed-edge-cloud that will make edge nodes host large amounts of data, they will become one of the main targets for hackers. Similarly, the increased communication and computing capabilities of 5G networks will make them very attractive, and the new radio access networks (RAN) will be the target of new kinds of attacks.
These topics are the ones, among many others, that this post-doc will deal with. The work will largely leverage security and resilience performance monitoring techniques, vulnerabilities management, and attack detection, all autonomously. Topics that will be specifically considered in this thesis are related to the security of slicing mechanisms, software components, and radio access as Open-RAN and Virtual-RAN.
