Job Description
Missions
To explore the fundamental and exotic properties of quantum materials—such as high-temperature superconductivity or strange metal behavior—intense magnetic fields, sometimes exceeding 100 T, are essential. To meet these challenges, the LNCMI Toulouse has a facility capable of performing physical measurements up to 90 T and has recently begun constructing a new non-destructive pulsed magnet, which will ultimately reach 120 T.
The successful candidate will have two main responsibilities.
The first will be to develop a research program on quantum materials, such as high-temperature superconductors, using the measurement techniques available at the laboratory.
The second will involve supervising PhD students and Master's interns, in alignment with the research program of the strongly correlated fermions group at LNCMI Toulouse.
Activity
The candidate will be responsible for conducting experiments under intense magnetic fields across multiple families of high-Tc superconductors, followed by data analysis and the dissemination of results. This will involve magnetotransport measurements, ultrasonic measurements (sound velocity and attenuation), and magnetization measurements using cantilevers. They will also contribute to the development of cutting-edge experimental techniques for the new non-destructive pulsed magnet, which will ultimately reach 120 T, as well as for the megagauss facility (fields exceeding 150 T).
Additionally, the candidate will train PhD students in experimental techniques, including cryogenics, sample preparation, electrical and ultrasonic measurements, and guide them in their research projects. Finally, they will provide technical and scientific support to international users of the pulsed field facility in Toulouse.
Your Profil
Skills
Experimental techniques in condensed matter physics: cryogenics, electrical measurements, and physical characterization of samples. The candidate must have proven experience (greater than 2 years) in the experimental study of quantum materials under intense magnetic fields. Proficiency in Python and LabVIEW will be required. In terms of personal qualities: Scientific rigor and innovative thinking to push the boundaries of experimental techniques. Teaching ability and a collaborative spirit for supervising students and working in an international team (prior experience in training and supervising students is essential). Autonomy and adaptability in a dynamic research environment.
Required qualification: PhD in condensed matter physics.
Your Work Environment
The Laboratoire National des Champs Magnétiques Intenses (LNCMI) is a very large research infrastructure (TGIR) of the CNRS, enabling researchers to carry out experiments in some of the most intense magnetic fields in the world. In addition, unique experimental facilities, developed in-house, are available for advanced physical measurements under magnetic fields.
Constraints and risks
Persons with pacemakers or medical implants, or with contraindications to magnetic fields, are not permitted to work in this position due to health risks associated with exposure to strong magnetic fields.
Compensation and benefits
