Job Description

Missions

The Laboratoire National des Champs Magnétiques Intenses (LNCMI-Grenoble, CNRS) is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for one year (renewable) to contribute to the research activities of the “Metals & Superconductors” group on strongly correlated electron systems under high magnetic field and very low temperature, and to take part in local-contact duties for external users during high-field experimental campaigns.
Scientific field: experimental condensed matter physics; strongly correlated electron systems; intermetallic heavy-fermion, kagome and Kondo compounds; field-induced exotic states (magnetic order, superconductivity, FFLO state, spin- and charge-density waves); frustrated magnetic insulators.
Research project: the project aims at characterising, through high-field, low-temperature measurements (calorimetry, magnetic torque / quantum oscillations, and occasionally electrical transport), the electronic instabilities and phase transitions of intermetallic compounds and frustrated insulators. The group benefits from an extensive network of academic collaborations providing high-quality single crystals on a regular basis.
Laboratory / team: LNCMI-Grenoble (CNRS), “Metals & Superconductors” group, under the scientific responsibility of Dr. Albin DE MUER and Dr. Ilya SHEIKIN.

Activity

- Perform experiments under high magnetic field (up to several tens of teslas) and very low temperature, mainly by calorimetry and magnetic torque (quantum oscillations), occasionally by electrical transport.
- Contribute to the preparation and characterisation of single-crystal samples received from collaborators.
- Analyse, interpret and model experimental data (phase diagrams, Fermi surfaces, thermodynamic parameters).
- Act as local contact: welcome and assist external user teams during their measurement campaigns on LNCMI facilities, set up experimental equipment, provide technical support and ensure safety compliance.
- Contribute to the scientific dissemination of results: writing articles, presenting at conferences and seminars, maintaining the group's national and international collaborations.
- Contribute, where relevant, to the supervision of trainees or PhD students.

Your Profil

Skills

- PhD in physics (condensed matter physics).
- Experience in low-temperature and/or high-magnetic-field experimental techniques.
- Knowledge of strongly correlated electron systems and the associated theoretical concepts.
- Practical experience with cryogenics (dilution refrigerators, 3He cryostats) and/or calorimetry / torque magnetometry.
- Data analysis and scientific programming skills (Python, Matlab, or similar).
- Good written and oral communication skills in English.
- Autonomy, rigour, and ability to work within a collaborative team, including technical interaction with external users.

Your Work Environment

The Laboratoire National des Champs Magnétiques Intenses is a CNRS large scale research infrastructure allowing researchers to carry out experiments in some of the most intense magnetic fields in the world. Continuous fields up to 37 T are available on the Grenoble site. Furthermore, unique experimental home-made setups are available for advanced physical measurements under high magnetic fields.
The candidate will work in the “Metals & Superconductors” research group strongly interacting with Dr. Albin DE MUER and Dr. Ilya SHEIKIN, and will collaborate with national and international research teams in the frame of already existing collaborations.

Constraints and risks

Individuals with pacemakers or medical implants who have contraindications to magnetic fields, are not permitted to work in this position due to health risks from the presence of strong magnetic fields.
