Job Description
Missions
Postdoctoral Researcher (M/F) at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (LNCMI) – French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), Grenoble, FRANCE, in experimental condensed matter physics.
The selected candidate will join the Ultrasound group, led by D. Le Boeuf. Their mission will be to advance our understanding of novel states of matter arising from strong electronic correlations. More specifically, the mission will focus on investigating the electronic mechanisms underlying unconventional superconductivity in transition metal oxides and heavy fermion systems.
Activity
Conducting experiments in cryogenic environments and under high magnetic fields. The selected candidate will measure, analyze, and interpret the ultrasonic and electronic transport properties of strongly correlated electron systems. Numerical methods will be used to analyze and model the results, complementing the activities. The existing measurement setup will be utilized, and its performance will be enhanced to expand measurement capabilities, extend the accessible experimental range to lower temperatures, and improve the sensitivity and quality of the measurements.
Your Profil
Skills
The candidate must hold a PhD in experimental condensed matter physics. Proficiency in cryogenic and vacuum techniques is essential. Knowledge and experience in electrical measurements, lock-in detection, and radiofrequency signal analysis are also critical skills for this position. The candidate must have excellent manual dexterity to handle sub-millimeter objects under a microscope. A solid understanding of solid-state physics is required, including: low-energy excitations in solids, magnetism, superconductivity, charge transport theory, thermodynamics, phase transitions, and group theory. Programming skills for instrumentation, data processing, and analysis are also necessary, such as LabVIEW and Python. Communication skills are important, and it is required to have good mastery of English language.
Your Work Environment
: The Laboratoire National des Champs Magnétiques Intenses is a CNRS large scale research infrastructure allowing researchers to carry out experiments in some of the most intense magnetic fields in the world. Continuous fields up to 36 T are available on the Grenoble site. The candidate will work within the ultrasound research group in close collaboration with Dr. Le Boeuf and will engage with national and international research teams through existing partnerships. The successful applicant will have access to all group facilities, including a 20 T superconducting magnet and associated cryogenic inserts covering a wide temperature range, as well as state-of-the-art instrumentation.
Constraints and risks
Individuals with pacemakers or medical implants who have contraindications to magnetic fields, are not permitted to work in this position due to health risks from the presence of strong magnetic fields.
The LNCMI facilities operate 7 days a week, 20 hours a day. Depending on the schedule, experiments on resistive magnets may occasionally be carried out during off-peak hours and at weekends (compensation in the form of time off).
