Thermal transport and management is a major issue with many fundamental and technological implications. In this context, 2D materials will allow to probe a scale never reached that defies current knowledge. Well-established models for 3D crystals fail for one-atom-thick structures and innovative experimental and theoretical approaches are needed. Surprisingly, a huge effort has led to a better understanding of electrical conduction in graphene (while thermal transport is still in its infancy).


This postdoctoral internship aims to design graphene suspended membranes and other 2D materials to explore the new frontiers of thermal transport. 2D membranes are a challenge in terms of nano-fabrication, and allow to overcome a too invasive substrate for thermal 2D scales [1]. Our approach combines complementary expertise in i) the fabrication of nano-structures of complex geometries as thermal transport test platforms (in collaboration with C2N (Orsay) [2,3]); ii) spatially resolved temperature measurements by Raman spectroscopy; iii) and the development of original theoretical models (in collaboration with IMPMC (Paris) [4]).


The candidate must have a Ph.D. and strong skills on condensed matter physics. The work will be essentially experimental and will include samples fabrication. Thus the candidate will already have some experience on nano-fabrication techniques, even stacks of 2D materials. In addition, an experimental skill in Raman spectroscopy and / or in electronic transport is required.
