Job Description
Missions
We are opening a postdoctoral position on the topic of integrated hybrid magnon–photon systems, to work in the Micro and Nanomagnetism team of Institut Néel and within the project “Magnon-Based Resources Addressing Quantum Enabling Technologies” (MAGNON-BRAQET, 2025‒2029). The project is to develop cryogenic, integrated, non-reciprocal microwave devices for use in quantum engineering. It is part of the exploratory program SPIN, a nationwide research effort on spintronic technologies funded by France 2030.
Our on-going project has already achieved the successful growth of extremely high-quality epitaxial layers of iron garnets on diamagnetic substrates compatible with low-temperatures, enabling for the first time the benefits from state-of-the-art magnonic coherence to be leveraged in cryogenic conditions. The next step involves developing experimentally the proofs of concept for integrated cryogenic circulators and isolators.
Activity
Starting from a few innovative designs, your task will be:
- to fabricate the hybrid chips combining patterned magnetic insulator elements and superconductors
- measure their properties at few Kelvin
- refine device concepts
- explore new opportunities in hybrid magnon–photon systems.
In addition, you will be involved in:
- Developing and optimizing cleanroom processes
- Overseeing the conception of advanced specialized instrumentation
- Training and mentoring Master's and PhD students in fabrication techniques and experimental measurements.
Your Profil
Skills
Position requirements:
- a PhD degree in Physics or Material Sciences;
- in-depth knowledge of magnetization dynamics, magneto-transport, microwave spectroscopy;
- experience and skills in cleanroom nanofabrication;
- good practical and data analysis capabilities;
- a commitment to teamwork and scientific communication;
- interest in instrumental developments, as we strive to continuously improve our setups.
Selection criteria:
The following criteria will be evaluated during selection:
- the academic merit of the candidates and their ability to conduct research, as demonstrated in their previous Ph.D. thesis works;
- their background and expertise in relation to the proposed project;
- their technical skills; and their ability to mentor and co-supervise PhD students in relation with the project.
Your Work Environment
Institut NÉEL (http://neel.cnrs.fr/) is a condensed matter physics laboratory of the CNRS. Strong of about 450 members, the teams from NEEL cover quantum circuits, spintronics, electron-correlated systems, materials, low-dimensional magnetism, superconductivity... The lab gathers more than 20 research groups that benefit from a unique, high-level support from technical groups, including a unique expertise in cryogeny and a cutting-edge cleanroom user facility.
