Job Description

Missions

The researcher will draw on newly acquired expertise in the growth of single crystals with homogeneous composition and single crystals with composition gradients to assist in the preparation of samples of various compositions, potentially including the addition of dopants. The researcher will be responsible for thermodynamic characterisations (calorimetry, monitoring of phase transitions via optical measurements, measurement of thermal fatigue), microstructural characterisations (composition analysis, SEM, optical analysis). He will participate in crystallographic characterisations (X-ray diffraction in the laboratory and using large-scale instruments, drafting of proposals and participation in measurement campaigns) and mechanical (measurement of mechanical fatigue).

Activity

- Optimisation of elastocaloric single crystals of copper-based alloys (main task)
- Orientation and shaping of materials (main task)
- Physical and micromechanical characterisation of controlled compositions (DSC, optical calorimetry, nanoindentation) (main task)
- Participation in large-scale instrument campaigns and synchrotron measurements (secondary task)
- Measurement of thermal and mechanical fatigue (secondary task)
- Monitoring of micro-pillar cutting (secondary task)

Your Profil

Skills

- Materials science (expertise)
- Microstructural studies (microscopy, electron and X-ray diffraction, crystallography) (good practice)
- Physical measurements (DSC, micromechanics) (good practice)
- Data analysis and processing (good practice)
- A willingness to work in a team
- Good communication skills, good writing skills are an advantage
- Experience with Python, a scripting language, is desirable

Your Work Environment

The Institut NÉEL is a CNRS unit (UPR 2940) under agreement with the University Grenoble Alpes. The laboratory is related to the CNRS Physique. It is located in Grenoble, in the heart of a unique scientific, industrial and cultural environment. It is one of the largest French national research institutes for fundamental research in condensed matter physics enriched by interdisciplinary activities at the interfaces with chemistry, engineering and biology. It consists of 450 employees, including 175 researchers.
CNRS is a public, scientific and technological organisation.
The core mandate is to identify, carry out ou have carried out, either alone or with partners, all research that advances science or contributes to the country's economic, social, and cultural progress. Internationally recognised for the excellence of its scientific research, the CNRS is a reference in the world of research and development, as well as for the general public.

The postdoctoral researcher will be based at the Institut Néel in Grenoble, a fundamental research laboratory in condensed matter physics with a staff of 450. They will join the TPS (Thermodynamics of Small Systems) team, which is investigating new experimental paradigms to understand how very small-scale activity or energy models govern the physics and organisation of many systems. Collaboration with the SIMaP (Materials Science and Engineering) laboratory and the PM (Metal Physics) team in Grenoble is planned for microstructural and mechanical studies.

Constraints and risks

List of occupational hazards associated with the position:
- Hazards related to products (chemicals, including CMR substances, asbestos, etc.), emissions (fumes, wood dust, etc.), and waste (sewage, standing water, etc.)
- Risks associated with work equipment (hazardous materials, pressurized equipment, vibrating tools, restrictive Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), etc.)
- Risks associated with computer work (ergonomics, etc.)
